The goal of the international Erasmus+ cooperation project "Communities Against Disasters" is the exchange of knowledge and joint exercises with Icelandic volunteer rescuers from the institution Slysavarnafélagið Landsbjörg.
The original inspiration for the project is a UN report which predicts more severe storms and flooding in Estonia due to climate change. For Iceland, the risk of landscape fires is increasing. During the project, the field of emergency response to the war in Ukraine was added.
The Estonian side was familiarised with INSARAG's working principles in disaster management, the basic knowledge of emergency rescue. During the exercises, rescue operations in case of floods and rushing water were practised (use of a water line, self-rescue in rushing water, overcoming obstacles).
The Icelandic party was introduced to the principles and logic of extinguishing landscape fires. During the exercises, the basic activities of extinguishing a landscape fire (setting up the hose system, ensuring water supply, extinguishing) were practised. An exercise on disaster response and cooperation between different structures was carried out using virtual reality.
Starting date of the project: February 2022
The aim of the project is to collect donations and use them to equip Ukrainian rescuers suffering from Russian aggression.
