Volunteers defended Rohuküla harbour

19.August 2024 On Monday evening, members of the Estonian Rescue Association's technical rescue unit gathered in Rohuküla harbour for a flood prevention exercise.
According to the scenario of the exercise, a level II storm warning was issued for Western Estonia in the run-up to the celebration of re-independence. Wind speeds reached up to 30 m/s and with westerly winds, water levels could rise up to 134 cm above Amsterdam zero along the West Estonian coast. Estonian Rescue Association was asked to help build a 30-metre water barrier and secure the Rohuküla harbour building with sandbags to prevent seawater from entering the building.

The purpose of the event was to assess the unit's preparedness and prepare for the autumn flooding period. "Floods have been a frequent occurrence in recent years, and as a result of climate change, extreme natural conditions have become common in Estonia," said Risto Roomet, head of the technical rescue unit of the Estonian Rescue Association.

"Today, Lake Tamula in Võru is threatening to overflow, and in cooperation with the municipality, we are on high alert - if the lake starts to exceed a certain level, the Estonian Rescue Association will respond. The Rohuküla exercise is an example of how the technical rescue unit is ready to respond to similar challenges," Roomet said.

The technical rescue unit was set up in the Estonian Rescue Association in January this year, but members have been trained for a year and a half. The unit's aim is to mitigate human suffering and deal with the aftermath of disasters, filling a gap in Estonia's civil protection mechanism.

To date, the unit has over a hundred trained volunteers who have responded to the flooding in the village of Loo and are ready to respond to the consequences of various natural disasters.

Exercises was funded by the National Foundation of Civil-Society
