Päästeliit is the NGO of the year!

06.February 2025 On the 5th of February, the Network of Estonian Nonprofit Organizations and President Alar Karis presented awards to civil society doers who have stood out for their work and achievements in the past year.
The winners include volunteers, newcomers, long-established NGOs and networks, as well as one company and a foundation established by a local authority.

The award winners were chosen by a panel of experts from among a hundred nominations.

The biggest accolade - the NGO of the Year - went to Päästeliit - Estonian Rescue Association. The award was presented by the jury of the most prestigious organisation, which selected the winner, the Estonian Rescue Association. The award also includes prize money, this time raised entirely from donations from good people and organisations at the 2024 fundraising event. This year the sum is 4610€.

"We know how many fierce NGOs are active in Estonia in various fields, and the fact that we have been recognised among all of them is touching to the core of our hearts. We are very proud of our members and our volunteer rescuers," said Piia Kallas, Chairman of the Board of the Estonian Rescue Association.

In his speech, President Alar Karis stressed the importance of volunteering, but also the importance of noticing and recognising it: "Everyday volunteering has the potential to shape the face of our country, to draw the lines of caring and helping. It is the seemingly small acts of volunteering that make Estonia a better place," said Karis.

According to the Head of State, volunteers show how volunteer perseverance, dedication, and noticing can help to do great things. "They have brought Estonia international recognition and added joy to local life. I am sure that all of you have been able to feel a lot of joy from your activities. And you also have reason to be proud of yourselves," President Karis addressed the volunteers.

This recognition is for all our members and supporters. Together with you, we have been able and will be able to continue to make Estonian communities safer and support Ukrainian rescuers.

For 15 years, the Estonian Rescue Association has been the heart and backbone of volunteer rescue in Estonia. Representing volunteers from land, sea and special rescue services, the association offers its members advocacy and training and the opportunity to participate in international projects. The Rescue Association actively cooperates with the state and authorities and is also one of Estonia's biggest supporters in Ukraine, helping Ukrainian rescuers with almost €7 million worth of equipment.
