CTIF volunteer rescuers gathered in Tallinn

19.September 2025 This week, the Estonian Rescue Association organized a meeting of the volunteer rescuers commision of the International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) in Tallinn.
Estonian Rescue Association recently organized a meeting of the International Association of Fire and Rescue Services (CTIF) volunteer rescuers commision, which brought together representatives from 17 countries in Estonia. During the two-day meeting, participants visited the Kaberneeme volunteer rescue team, held a general meeting, and visited the Põhjala brewery.

On the first day of the visit, the international group headed to the Kaberneeme Volunteer Rescue Team, where local team leader Rait Killandi introduced the history of volunteering in Kaberneeme, the Estonian rescue system, and the situation of volunteers in Estonia. The guests were impressed by how teams in small Estonian towns have become the center of community safety thanks to the support of projects and cooperation partners.

The second day focused on the general meeting, which was opened by Margo Klaos, Director General of the Estonian Rescue Services Agency. The main topic of the meeting was the involvement of young people in rescue work, which was reviewed by the leaders of volunteer rescue organizations who were present and joined via the internet. Among others, the leaders of the Ukrainian volunteer rescue service and Energoatom's rescue department were also present, who introduced the situation in Ukraine, i.e. how the rescue service works in a crisis environment.

According to Piia Kallas, head of the Rescue Association, international visibility is extremely important for Estonia: "Ukraine is not defending itself against aggression alone today. It has support and friends around the world, who were also represented at the meeting in Tallinn. Regular meetings and introducing Estonia to our cooperation partners are a crucial part of unity, so this meeting was a strong contribution to European security for Estonia," Kallas said.

The second day ended in a more relaxed atmosphere at the Põhjala Brewery, where guests were introduced to the history of Estonian craft beer and got to taste what Estonia has to offer.

The volunteer rescue workers' meeting was organized in cooperation with the Estonian Rescue Services Agency.

CTIF (Comité Technique International de prévention et d’extinction du Feu) is an international association of fire and rescue services, founded in 1900 with the aim of promoting human safety, exchanging experiences, and developing cooperation between rescue and firefighting organizations. CTIF brings together dozens of countries and hundreds of organizations around the world, organizes conferences, competitions, and working groups, collects statistics on fires and rescue events, and contributes to the development of the skills of both professional and volunteer rescuers and youth rescue brigades.
