Estonian Rescue Association has just taken a new aid consignment to Ukraine, consisting largely of a mobile unit for psychologists from the Rescue Service. Estonian Rescue Association (ERA) was recently in Rivne, where we handed over a mobile point for psychologists from the Ukrainian Rescue Service. The minibus with the necessary equipment will help psychologists from the Ukrainian Rescue Service to reach those in need more effectively, and the equipment in the vehicle will give better possibilities to provide help to those who have suffered mentally from the war.
In the context of the Ukraine relief effort, the ERA was recently approached by a private donor who, together with a group of friends, wanted to provide targeted support for people suffering from mental health problems in the war. The Ukrainian Rescue Service had asked for the support of their psychologists in this field, and so we were able to support the psychologists of the Ukrainian Rescue Service.
At the request of the private donors, the car was named "світанок", which means dawn in Estonian - symbolically dawn for the independent Ukraine. The name evoked a special feeling of gratitude and warmth in the Ukrainians.
Hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are also suffering a mental attack as a result of Russian missile and drone attacks. Whether it is the day-long sirens of an air raid or the constant barrage of rockets in the neighbourhood, mental health in Ukraine is under constant attack for the third year running.
First responders to attacks are always rescuers, but there are dozens of psychologists working behind the scenes to support both rescuers and civilians. Left behind are those who survive the attack and go on to live with post-traumatic stress, for which counselling needs to start immediately.
Particular attention will be paid to children growing up in conditions we cannot imagine. Children today grow up in an environment that is incomprehensible to them, and the constant threat to their lives leaves a permanent mark on their mental health, which psychologists try to alleviate at the scene. This is why the aid package included toys for children, crayons, felt-tips, colouring papers, etc.
Videos and pictures of the work of psychologists were shown to the ERA delegation, and psychologists in active practice, who sometimes find it difficult to talk about their work and events, spoke about their experiences on the spot. We can never put ourselves in the situation that the people of Ukraine live in every day, but we can do our part to support the thousands of people who have suffered in the war.
The emotionally wrenching but much-needed aid consignment could only be delivered to Ukraine with the support of private donors. We therefore call for continued support for the rescuers and civilians of Ukraine who are operating in unimaginable conditions. This latest shipment is proof that help is still needed and together we can make the future of Ukraine's children safer.
Through Päästeliit, it is possible to support the Ukrainian rescue service through special projects: for example, support for rescuers, humanitarian demining, psychology, first aid. In cooperation with the Ukrainian Rescue Service, we select the most important equipment for them at the moment and deliver it ourselves with the help of volunteers, actively forwarding the list of all the equipment sent to the Estonian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
You can support the Ukrainian rescuers by making a transfer to PÄÄSTELIIT / EE547700771002741382 with the keyword "Ukraine".
If you would like to support a specific project, let us know - together we will ensure the safety of civilians and rescuers.
